POTA – An Exploding Part of Ham Radio

Parks on the AIR (POTA) is an ongoing growing part of amateur radio worldwide. POTA encouarges amateurs to go out to the parks or other designated areas, such as historical sites, and operate, make contacts with fellow hams. There are two parts to POTA: activators and hunters. To make a successful activation, activators must make at least 10 contacts from a POTA designated site, those who make contact with them are called hunters. Both activators and hunters may be registered with POTA, only activators submit logs to POTA, but awards are made to both activators and hunters.

This is an interesting article about POTA, link is here (article is titled: Eight Reasons POTA is the Best Thing Ever for Amateur Radio).

Brian VE3KLT and I (VE3GAM) activated VE-4888 Southwold Earthworks and VE-5082 The Trans-Canada Trail on Oct. 7th. The map below shows our contacts that day.

Gear used was a Yaesu FT891 running 90 watts, 20ah Bioenno battery, feeding a Wolf River Coils vertical.
